Great Smoky Mountains National Park Blog by Richard Weisser of SmokyPhotos.com

It's the first day of fall. Some photos of past autumns in anticipation of the season!

Brilliant autumn leaf color in the Great Smoky Mountains National ParkIt's the official first day of Autumn 2009, and that always get me excited. Fall is my favorite time of year for several reasons.

I love the cooler crisp weather, and the brilliant sunshine dancing on the yellows, reds, oranges and purples of the foliage.

I love the smell of the fallen leaves and the crunching sound when you walk on them. I love the smell of fried apple pies and the sweet and refreshing taste of ice-cold cider.

I love snuggling by a warm fire on a chilly evening and listening to the embers crackling and hissing as they dissipated into ash.

In honor of the arrival of the season, here are some photos from past autumns. I hope that you enjoy them!

Thank you for the photos Richard. I live in the high desert so very few trees turn like the ones in your collection!

Fall has always been my favorite season.  Being a native New Englander I grew up with some of the most impressive fall color explosions known to man.  But it doesn't matter where I am ... fall holds lots of memories for me.

We aren't seeing the great color at all this year.  Just to dry.  Leaves are turning color and then brown within days!

It is one of the nicest parts of the year in Michigan. Most of the golf courses are empty on Saturday with all  the college football going on.

Gorgeous colors Richard... Since we've got snow falling as I type, it looks like we've passed fall and are falling into winter. :)

Richard,

Your pictures bring back such fond memories of my childhood in upstate N.Y. We use to vacation in Scroon Lake and the fall was one of the best times to go! The color of the leaves were magnificent and you are right about the smell. We would rake big piles of leaves up and jump in them..nothing like it! Your pictures are wonderful as usual!

Thank goodness it's finally here. Of course in our area of the country it will still be a little while before we get cool weather, but I'm glad Fall has arrived.
